Celebrate Economic Vitality

That's A Wrap

Thank you for following along with us this week with #MacDevWeek / #EDW2021 / #EconDevWeek We’d be remiss if we didn’t take a moment to acknowledge, and thank our Founding Partners. Their effort over the years is a huge reason why we are able to do the work we do!

Launched in 2004 as a volunteer effort under the name MOREDI, the McMinnville partnership was formed to address the critical need for a one-stop business development office. The primary work was to support recruitment efforts.

In early 2006, MOREDI became the McMinnville Economic Development Partnership (MEDP) and secured long-term funding commitments from its founding partners - McMinnville Water & Light, The McMinnville Area Chamber of Commerce, McMinnville Industrial Promotions, The City of McMinnville, and area businesses. The work we do would not be possible without their guidance, foresight, and contributions.

Our #EconDevWeek highlights continue with our friends and partners at Visit McMinnville.

Jeff Knapp with Visit McMinnville

“Economic development finds its way into every part of life within our community.”  Said Jeff Knapp, the Executive Director of Visit McMinnville. “A huge part of what we (Visit McMinnville) do beyond promoting tourism is working on projects that enhance the quality of life for residence that really resonate with the community. When people come to visit, they can imagine what it would be like to live here, start a business here, grow their families here. Economic Development is opportunities for kids, it is quality of life, it’s the potential to retain talent and attract talent.”  Tourism and the hospitality industry play such a large role in the economic success of our community. In 2019 travel spending in McMinnville was $38.9 million. That is going directly to supporting local families, farmers, artists, small business owners, and it's money that is being reinvested back into the community.

With creative marketing campaigns identifying McMinnville as the “Land of Plenty”, cheeky slogans, and charming videos that celebrate everything our community has to offer, their work promoting McMinnville Oregon as a tourist destination is fun and inspiring.

The Mission of Visit McMinnville is to Enhance the economic vitality of our community by promoting McMinnville as a year-round visitor, convention, and event destination by maximizing collaborative partnerships, efficiently activating transient lodging tax revenue into effective sales and marketing programs, and cultivating a world-class visitor experience.

Visit McMinnville’s vision is to be the most effective Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) in the State of Oregon, to provide the best delivery of tourism service and information to McMinnville visitors, to be the tourism marketing resource of choice for businesses in McMinnville, and to be the industry leader in financial management and stewardship of public funds.

#EconomicDevelopment is what gives McMinnville, that certain je ne sais quoi, especially when it comes to our Historic Mainstreet. This is due, largely in part, to our partners at the McMinnville Downtown Association. We eagerly await the arrival of the McMinnville Farmers Market each year, and last summer they were able to transform 3rd street in the midst of a pandemic, to a thriving outdoor weekend promenade and eatery with the Dine Out(side) program.  (Save the Date! Coming back Memorial Weekend through the summer!)

Executive Director Dave Rucklos said “Economic development is creating a positive business community. We do that at the MDA through event promotion, by keeping the downtown clean and safe, and by working with business owners to create the best possible look we can downtown. This is hugely helpful to the economy because when people come to visit they fall in love with downtown and want to spend more time in the community. To me, economic development means protecting and enhancing what we have. “ The mission of the MDA is to promote and enhance our historic downtown as the economic, social, and cultural heart of the community.”

Kudos to the MDA Staff, Board of Directors, and countless volunteers who help to make our community so special with events like the UFO Festival, Summer Concerts, Dine Out(Side), Santa’s Parade, and more.

McMinnville Area Chamber Of Commerce, Red Chair

The International Economic Development Council (IEDC) defines economic development as “the intentional practice of improving a community’s economic well-being and quality of life.”  And what we truly love about this definition is that it leaves some room for interpretation.  Economic development isn’t just one thing, and it’s not just the job of one organization, especially in McMinnville. We rely on our Economic Vitality Partners to help ensure the success, vibrancy, and innovation in our community.

Today as part of #EconDevWeek we are highlighting our partners at the McMinnville Area Chamber of Commerce. Their Mission is to support a strong local economy, and they do this with a variety of programs, networking, and advocacy. Community events like Lemonade Day, help nurture the entrepreneurial spirit in local youth.

“The Chamber of Commerce has been at the forefront of economic development in McMinnville for over 100 years and we plan to continue to support a thriving, sustainable community into the next century.” Said Chamber President and CEO Gioia Goodrum. “ Economic development is community. It is Business, and it’s all of us partners walking together in the same direction.”

 Economic Development Week in McMinnville

MCMINNVILLE’S ECONOMIC VITALITY PARTNERS CELEBRATE NATIONAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT WEEK - MAY 9-15, 2021

McMinnville, Oregon joins cities nationwide to increase awareness of the positive work economic developers do to enhance local economic impact
(MCMINNVILLE, OR) -McMinnville Economic Development Partnership (MEDP) along with economic vitality partners, including The City of McMinnville, McMinnville Area Chamber of Commerce, McMinnville Downtown Association, and Visit McMinnville are collectively celebrating Economic Development Week May 9-15, 2021. This group, colloquially known as the “Stable Table”, works collaboratively to help ensure the economic growth and diversity of our community and contribute to the overall economic health of McMinnville. Each of these organizations provides a unique perspective, representative of a constituency important to the growth and future of our community.

McMinnville’s economic vitality leaders promote economic well-being and quality of life for this community by creating, retaining, and expanding jobs that facilitate growth, enhance wealth, and provide a stable tax base. These partners do everything they can to support our local businesses, helping them through the hurdles of start-ups, nurturing their growth, and celebrating their longevity.

The Stable Table group works to attract and retain high-quality jobs, develop vibrant communities, and improve the quality of life in our region, city, and state. They help to stimulate and incubate entrepreneurism in order to help establish the next generation of new businesses and provide leadership and excellence in economic development for this community. They serve their respective membership base, and partners through opportunities, networking, training courses, advisory services and research, publications, marketing, public policy advocacy, and initiatives, as well as execute the vision for the strategic plan for the economic vitality of the city outlined in Mactown 2032.

These partners are focused on accelerating the growth in living wage jobs, maintaining McMinnville’s positive business climate, expanding talent and attraction efforts, being a leader in hospitality and placed-based tourism, and improving infrastructure to better serve local businesses, visitors and residents.

“The City of McMinnville has been strategic in creating a data-driven, economic development plan to steer success.  It provides long-term focus. The Economic Development partners in the City use this as a guide to help direct their work and to identify potential resources, partnerships, and opportunities which amplify their efforts.” Said Jeff Knapp, the Executive Director for Visit McMinnville.

Now in its sixth year, National Economic Development Week was created by the International Economic Development Council, the largest professional membership organization for economic developers, in 2016 to recognize the unique role that economic development has in creating vibrant communities with strong economies. Over the span of five years, more than 450 campaigns have been created throughout the United States and Canada, creating millions of impressions, hundreds of news stories, blog entries, videos, events, and other activities. Cities, counties, and states recognized the week in past years through official proclamations, local community events, and informational campaigns online and through social media. The United States Economic Development Administration (EDA) has also issued a statement commemorating Economic Development Week in past years.

“As we continue to navigate the challenges and changes presented by Covid-19, it is such an important time to recognize the strength, grit, and dedication our community partners have demonstrated over the past 14 months. Economic Development isn’t just one thing, it's a collaboration driven by community, industry, tourism, and more. Economic Development makes our town more vibrant and sustainable and it adds to our quality of life here. We want to take this week to celebrate all those who help contribute to that.” - Tayler Brisbin Communications Coordinator for MEDP.
